About the Greater Ipswich Defence Precinct

Bringing defence industry, education, research and government together in Greater Ipswich

The Greater Ipswich Defence Precinct (GIDP) is a proposed precinct that will bring defence industry, education, research and government together in one place in South East Queensland. Located close to RAAF Base Amberley, the GIDP aims to:

  • build Australia's sovereign defence manufacturing capability
  • create high-skilled regional jobs
  • strengthen collaboration between industry and the Department of Defence.

Why the GIDP

Australia's defence policy puts growing emphasis on self-reliance and a resilient sovereign defence industrial base. The GIDP is designed to help deliver these priorities at a regional level: a place where industry, educators, researchers and Defence can work side by side.

What the precinct will offer

  • Sovereign capability: support for Australian defence manufacturing, sustainment and supply chain resilience.
  • Skills and training: better access to skills development and pathways into high-skilled defence and advanced manufacturing careers.
  • Local jobs: high-skilled employment for Ipswich and the wider region.
  • Collaboration: a shared environment connecting defence industry, education, research and government.

Why Greater Ipswich

Greater Ipswich sits close to RAAF Base Amberley, one of the Royal Australian Air Force's most significant bases. It is also part of South East Queensland's growing defence, aerospace and advanced manufacturing ecosystem.

Aligned with national priorities

The GIDP responds to the priorities set out in the Defence Strategic Review 2023, the Defence Industry Development Strategy 2024 and the 2026 National Defence Strategy. In particular, it supports the goal of strengthening Australia's sovereign defence industrial base.

Who's behind the GIDP

The GIDP is supported by a leadership group chaired by Jim Varghese AM. The group brings together senior government leadership, Defence command experience, defence-industry engagement, commercialisation and strategic communications expertise. Advisory services are provided by The Leadership Company (Qld) Pty Ltd and its partners.
